Norse warrior to Black Swan: The swan in Swansea is a pun. The area was once called Swein’s eg or ey, which means Swein’s island. Around 1000 AD a Norseman named Swein built a fort on an island in the River Tawe. Swien’s ey eventually became Swan-sea as the town grew. The famous black swan first appeared on the club’s shirts in the 1970s, when Swansea Town became Swansea City.
